We are pleased to share Talk #4 of the YAF Talks series: “Role of Non-Conventional Yeasts in the Development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)”.
This conversation focuses on one of the four pillars of the YAF research programme: developing new yeast cell factories to produce SAF. Our speakers discuss why SAF matters for decarbonising aviation, and why microbial bioproduction is a promising route to it. They also look at what non-conventional yeasts offer compared with model organisms like Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and at the challenges of engineering them. The talk goes on to cover the fuel properties that candidate molecules, such as terpenes, must meet, and the policy support needed to bring microbial SAF to market. It closes with the role young researchers can play in connecting the disciplines this field needs.
Featuring contributions from:
- Heber Gamboa (Imperial College London, UK) – Supervisor in the YAF Network
- Subhasis Behera (Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia) – Doctoral Candidate #11 in the YAF Network
- Young-Kyoung Park (INRAE, France) – Invited external speaker
Together, they offer a mix of academic and early-career perspectives on how engineered yeasts could help deliver the next generation of sustainable aviation fuels.
