An interview with…Tomás Zubak – Doctoral Candidate 1 (IMDEA Energy, Spain)

Name and Surname: Tomás Zubak

Organization: IMDEA Energy, Madrid

Major Fields of Research/Activity: Fermentation Technologies; Bioprocess Engineering; Strain Optimization

  • What is your role in the YAF project? What are you currently working on within the scope of YAF?

I’m Doctoral Candidate #1 within the YAF project, and I’m currently working on developing different fermentation strategies to enhance the production of microbial oil, a chemical precursor of sustainable aviation fuels. More specifically, I’m looking for more efficient ways to make it from organic waste instead of traditional feedstocks.

  • Why do you think the YAF research is important for your career development and how it will impact the society?

Being part of YAF means having the opportunity to learn from highly experienced people from top institutions and cutting-edge companies, while also contributing into solving a pressing global challenge: projects of this nature are vital for cutting CO2 emissions in the near future while also maintaining global connectivity.

  • What or who inspired you to go into academia/research?

I have always been curious about how things work and exploring ways to improve them. Doing research allows me to use that curiosity as fuel for solving problems and building things that benefit society.

  • For you, what is most challenging and/or exciting about your work in YAF?

One of the most exciting aspects of working at YAF is collaborating with colleagues from diverse personal and academic backgrounds, all working together to develop this very complex process. The challenge lies in the project’s well-defined scope, which means we must find innovative ways to make the process as efficient as possible.

  • Write a catchy slogan for your IRP.

“From Waste to Wings”

  • Where can we find you after work? Doing what?

Outside the lab I enjoy outdoor activities, listening to music, reading, and cooking for my loved ones.
