🎤An interview with…Jennifer Cueto – Supervisor of DC8 (IMDEA Energy)

Name and Surname: Jennifer Cueto

Organization: IMDEA Energy

Major Fields of Research/Activity: Biomass conversion, SAF production, plastic waste pyrolysis, zeolites

  • What is your role in the YAF project? What are you currently working on within the scope of YAF?

In YAF I am the supervisor of María Spinosa, doctoral candidate number 8. Together we focus on producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from long-chain fatty acids present in microbial oils. Our aim is to transform renewable biological resources into clean, low-emission fuel for the aviation sector.

  • Why do you think the YAF research is important for your career development and how it will impact the society?

YAF allows me to grow as a researcher in sustainable fuels, a key area for the future of energy and aviation. It contributes to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, lowering emissions, and transforming waste and renewable resources into real opportunities for a cleaner and more responsible society.

  • What or who inspired you to go into academia/research?

I was inspired by teachers who showed me that science is a tool to solve real-world problems. I realized research is not just about labs, but about creating solutions that can improve everyday life.

  • For you, what is most challenging and/or exciting about your work in YAF?

The most exciting part is turning materials seen as waste into valuable fuel for aviation. A key challenge is making the process efficient, scalable and truly sustainable. I also value working in a multidisciplinary team, learning from others and collaborating to build a more sustainable world.

  • Write an inspiring quote for the DC you are going to supervise in YAF.

Stay curious, stay resilient, and remember that every challenge you face is shaping you into the scientist the world needs.

  • Where can we find you after work? Doing what?

After work you can find me spending time with my family, enjoying moments with my pets, and making the most of the outdoors.
