Name and Surname: Abdullah Nasir
Organization: Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn, Estonia
Major Fields of Research/Activity: Metabolic Engineering of Yeast
- What is your role in the YAF project? What are you currently working on within the scope of YAF?
My role in YAF Project is engineering of a non-conventional yeast called Rhodotorula toruloides to produce high-energy molecules like terpenes that can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels in aviation. Right now, I am working on evolving yeast strains for improved consumption of carbon from biowaste substrate, to make the whole process sustainable and economic.
- Why do you think the YAF research is important for your career development and how it will impact the society?
YAF research helps me build my skills in bioengineering for sustainable fuel development — key for a career in green biotech. It also offers real impact to the society, by aiming to convert waste streams into clean aviation fuel, cutting emissions and reliance on fossil fuels – benefitting both climate and society.
- What or who inspired you to go into academia/research?
I have always wanted to pursue a career in science. With my background in Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences, I was drawn to this research project that bridges both. The YAF project offered the perfect opportunity to apply my knowledge in biotechnology towards solving real-world environmental problems and have a positive impact on society.
- For you, what is most challenging and/or exciting about your work in YAF?
Since YAF Project explores a new approach for sustainable aviation fuels, there isn’t much scientific literature to rely on for some specific questions, and that’s the most challenging part of my work. But that’s also what excites me the most – I get to figure things out for the first time, and I really enjoy that problem solving side of my research.
- Write a catchy slogan for your IRP.
YAF – From waste streams to jet streams!
- Where can we find you after work? Doing what?
After work, you can find me experimenting in the kitchen while listening to music, trying new flavours and finding creative ways to relax.
